Why have fire safety signs?
Fire safety signs are required under various pieces of legislation. Occupants of any building of any type need to be able to find their way out in an emergency safely and effectively and for this purpose fire safety signs are employed. It is also necessary for all signs to be made clearly visible for all the occupants of a building. Safety signs, if used and placed correctly, are a cost effective method of reducing the risk of a range of safety hazards, which are present in all types of commercial premises, of ever occurring or becoming out of control.

What are photoluminescent signs?
Photoluminescent fire safety signs ensure maximum visibility in all light levels.

Photoluminescent signs are manufactured from a photoluminescent material which absorbs and stores the energy from daylight or artificial light, so when in total darkness the sign will release its stored light and begin to ‘glow’ in the dark, assisting evacuation and the location of life saving equipment.

Current law requirements
As of 24 December 1998 fire safety signs must comply with the Health and Safety Signs (safety signs and signals) Regulations 1996. Furthermore, signs are also no longer allowed to be ‘text alone’ as they must also now include a symbol, either the European style or British Standard BS 5499: Part 1: 2002. Either of these two styles will satisfy current legislation but it is good practice for only one style to be adopted throughout a building.

All signs supplied by us comply with British Standard BS 5499 Part 1: 2002, Part 4: 2000 and Part 5: 2002 and with the Health Technical Memorandum 65 (HTM 65).
